SophiaXR is a company born out of Dr. Francisco R. Ortega's years of experience across industry, government, and academia. We concentrate on Extended Reality (XR) — including augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) — through both applications and research. That work spans user studies, user-experience evaluation, and consulting to improve XR applications, and we also offer AR/VR development. A particularly exciting area is spatial artificial intelligence (AI) — the technology behind the AR glasses now reaching the market, such as the Meta Ray-Ban line and others. These glasses may use monoscopic or stereoscopic displays, or no display at all.
Dr. Ortega has been building solutions for companies for decades (for example, Estée Lauder), and SophiaXR also offers agentic AI and human-centered AI. Agentic AI uses large language models (LLMs such as ChatGPT and Claude Opus) to automate work and deliver solutions for development teams and companies at large. Just as important is keeping humans in the loop — SophiaXR designs for effective human-AI collaboration by putting people at the center.
About the founder
SophiaXR was founded by Francisco R. Ortega, a Professor of Computer Science at Colorado State University and director of the Natural User Interaction Laboratory (NUILab). His research focuses on how people interact with computers through natural means — gesture, speech, gaze, and touch — applied to augmented and virtual reality.
